We're back. We're dirty, cold, and tired, and we had a wonderful time. We spent last night at the Portola Redwoods State Park, less than an hour from here. Katja, one of the Mountain School moms, arranged this annual fall camping trip for the school. There were about 20 other families, including Isaac's carpool mate Riley, all tenting it in the two group campsites.
We pitched our funny teepee tent, whittled sharp sticks to roast hot dogs and marshmallows, played in the creek and in the "Shell Tree" -- the remains of a 2000-year-old redwood, complete with bunny-holes through the trunk and deep dark crevices -- and generally enjoyed watching the kids amuse themselves in the woods. Who needs playgrounds? Isaac LOVED it. I think he and his Dad are going to enjoy many camping trips in the future, and I might join them every now and again.
