Yesterday I met with our manager to ask him what my path/timeline might be to move from "Greeter/Qualifier" to Designer at Home Depot. He proposed that I take over Nabeena's work as an Expediter in order to learn all the things about kitchen specification and installation that might go wrong, so that I would be better prepared to be a designer. He mentioned a year from my hire date as a possible timeframe.
Now, I think Nabeena has a really unpleasant job, and that I would dislike it (and be worse at it) than she is. From what I can tell, Nabeena cleans up other people's mistakes and problems. She spends half her time on the phone, often with unhappy customers. And she seems to juggle about 20 tasks at one time.
And, one of my Greeter co-workers mentioned to me a while ago that Bob was trying to get her to take Nabeena's job. So I have a feeling this is just the manager blowing smoke, trying to get someone into this job which he needs to fill because Nabeena really wants out.
On the other hand, it might give me a chance to visit job sites and get a first-hand view of all the different construction elements that go into a kitchen -- which I've been wanting to do anyway.
I mentioned it to two of the designers later, and they both thought it was a bad idea. One of them volunteered to speak with the manager and tell him I should be a designer instead of an expediter, which was really nice of him.
I guess I'll start asking Nabeena more about what she does and see what develops.
Newscasters are using the innocuous-sounding word "culled" as a euphemism for "slaughtered" in reference to mass killing of chickens to prevent the spread of bird flu. I'm not saying the practice is wrong, but I think we should call it what it is.
I am spending way too much time on the Kitchens forum at That Home Site. And now I've gone and volunteered to do an FAQ section! I think this forum has replaced my former addiction to the No. Cal weddings forum on The Knot. Sigh...
On Saturday, my 6 months' worth of Onfolio bookmarks and snippets were hosed by the blue screen of death. Second time this has happened to me. I wrote Onfolio.
It's Tuesday morning. They have already communicated with me three times (one of them from his home, where he's off on paternity leave). They've given me a free upgrade to their professional edition. And, they've taken my corrupted file, scrubbed it, and sent it back with as much data as they could recover.
I was happier than a pig in shit at work (Homo Depot) today. I decided to reorganize the drawers of Corian samples, so I got to spend hours separating 100s of little squares into groups by color, and then figuring out how to best organize them in the drawers. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Not that I'm one of those conspiracy theorists, but...I'm trying to figure out why Bush is trying to scare the s--t (unnecessarily as far as I can tell) out of everyone about Social Security in order to get partial privatization.
Could it have anything to do with the swelling retirement of Baby Boomers, which in a few years will mean a net outflow of assets from the stock market? Partial privatization will create a big inflow into the stock market, perhaps offsetting the demographics. Good for the stock market, good for Bush's powerful friends, n'est-ce pas?
Boy, did I have a crappy day at work today. First I burned the shit out of my finger on a hot sugar concoction, which made me slightly nauseous for nearly an hour. Then my boss (at my unpaid job) yelled at me for talking to the other pastry chef too much. In front of everyone. A tense silence descended on the whole kitchen for the rest of the time I was there. Ick.
